Debt Trap - Credit Cards
A quick search engine check reveals that the subjects of debt consolidation, debt help, debt relief, and credit card debt are among the most widely searched terms on the internet. Why is it that so many people are in so much financial trouble? What generates this mentality?
It would seem that wealth is rapidly moving beyond the reach of the majority of people. Easy credit through the ever-burgeoning credit card industry is contributing greatly to increasing personal debt.
In this issue I want to focus on credit cards.
Credit cards are used by billions of people to rack up trillions of dollars of debt. They are aggressively marketed by banks and finance companies as a "convenient" method of payment. And there is little doubt that carrying credit cards is far safer than carrying wads of cash.
Unfortunately, easy credit is also luring more and more people faster into personal debt than anything else ever invented.
I know many people who have multiple credit cards. They use one credit card to make the monthly payments against other credit cards that they have already maxed out. Maybe you know somebody like that. It's called living beyond your means - buy now, pay later. This is the great credit card debt trap.
To become wealthy you need to learn how to control debt. Sadly, some people will never learn to control debt. Debt controls them. It shackles them to a life of poverty. One day they come to the realization that their spending habit is out of control. This often happens when the credit card debt is turned over to the arrears department of the bank or worse, a third-party debt collection agency.
Debt collection agencies are merciless. They work on commissions. They will telephone debtors at all hours of the day and night. Aggressive rogue agents will make unscheduled visits to your home despite whatever legislation or guidelines say that they should not. Their harassing tactics can get pretty nasty - like calling EVERY day.
This is the reality of uncontrolled debt. But it is the furthest thing from the mind of free-spending Sally when she gets that first shiny new credit card with the $5,000 spending limit.
In a matter of months, weeks and in some instances, just days, the spending limit is reached. Sadly, Sally will find that being debt free is a thing of the past. Somehow she needs to find a way to get out of her fix.
Eventually, by whatever means, that credit card debt has to be paid back. But the thrill of spending is too great for many. So, what do they do? They go out and get another credit card and the debt cycle repeats. Or they opt for a debt consolidation loan.
Debt consolidation, depending on the individual concerned, may or may not be a viable debt solution. If in doubt you should consult an independent professional advisor such as an accountant.
Financial ignorance or spending weakness is all too common. This is the wealth plan of the banks and finance companies and debt collection agencies. It is a booming industry. They make it so easy to get credit and lure undisciplined and unsuspecting people into debt. And this is why most people will never get out of debt and become independently wealthy.
There are ways to get out of debt. There is a debt solution to every debt problem. Bankruptcy should be the last thing to consider. A debt consolidation loan should also be very strongly investigated before any commitment is made along that path.
With respect to credit cards:
Credit card spending is expensive, so...
use them judiciously
only put essential or emergency purchases on them
NEVER use them for cash advances
pay more than the minimum monthly amount to eradicate it ASAP
try to completely eliminate the debt on the most expensive credit card first (this will save the most interest)
limit yourself to one or two credit cards at most
if you simply cannot stop spending, lock the card away or CUT IT UP!
The best solution is to change your financial habits and your way of thinking. Make
wealth
your focus, not debt. Then you will solve your debt problem for the rest of your life. Think how you will feel when you are debt free. This could be just a simple decision away.
Credit cards can be a debt trap. If you use them do not abuse them.
